A New Commandment: Jesus’ Legacy

On the Fifth Sunday of Easter in Year C the Gospel Reading is taken from John 13:31 – 35. We often reflect and talk about the legacy we will leave after we have gone. We want to ensure that we leave behind something that is good, noble and reflective of our values!

In the short passage from John’s Gospel this weekend, we hear how Jesus prepares to leave his disciples by giving them “a new commandment: love one another just as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)- what a legacy!

The following reflection prepared by Veronica Lawson RSM was first published at  https://www.mercyworld.org.   It  is offered here as a resource for prayer and reflection in the coming week:

Two of the sayings that are part of the legacy of our Founder, Bishop Daniel Delany echo aspects of Jesus command and continue to inspire and challenge us.

“Love God and live together in peace and charity”.

“Do everything in a spirit of holy love and you will not find your hands empty at journey’s end.”

(Bishop Daniel Delany: Founder of the Brigidine Sisters, Ireland, in 1807)
