In John’s gospel, characters often misunderstand Jesus and this gives him an opportunity to lead his hearers to a deeper or different understanding of his words. This is the case in John 3: 14-21 where we hear Jesus’ words to Nicodemus who thought he knew the things of God and who came to Jesus ‘by night’.
