According to estimates, between 2000 and 2016, there was a 38% increase in child labour globally. (It’s hard to imagine that the effects of Covid-19 since then haven’t worsened this statistic).
While almost 100 million children have been removed from child labour over the past twenty years it is believed that 152 million children across the world are still in child labour. The challenge is concentrated in agriculture, service and industries.
Child labour is work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity.
In this International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, let us be ready to learn more about these issues and to take some action to end child labour. One simple suggestion is that we become more aware of our purchasing choices of tea, coffee, chocolate and cotton and by shopping ethically for these products.
