Child Slaves vs Cocoa Companies

Our Brigidine Congregation Forum (2016) called us to commit “to the purchase of Fair Trade and other products which promote social and environmental wellbeing”. Aware that 2021 is the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour this seems a good time to review our purchasing patterns.

A class action lawsuit has been filed in the US Federal Court on behalf of eight young Malian men who were trafficked as children and forced to harvest cocoa in Cote D’Ivoire. Defendant companies include Nestle, Mars, Mondelez and Hershey.

Aware that there are more than a million child labourers in the cocoa fields of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, ACRATH invites all to send a message to chocolate companies that we do not want to buy chocolate tainted by child labour.
