Brigidines recognise International Day of the Girl Child, which is held annually on 11 October.
Established by the United Nations (UN), the Day brings a call for greater
awareness of the unique challenges facing girls, particularly those living in poverty.
While the Day encourages acknowledgement and celebration of girls’ achievements, it also promotes empowerment and advocacy for the fulfilment of human rights for girls around the globe.
Across the world, women and girls are tackling issues such as early and forced marriage, education inequality, violence, climate injustice and inequitable access to healthcare.
This year’s theme is ‘Girls’ vision for the future.’
The theme highlights the need for change to be driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future.
Disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, poverty, conflict and gender inequality, today’s generation of girls are still denied their rights, have their choices restricted and their futures limited.
International Day of the Girl Child challenges us to become aware, spread awareness and to support programs to improve the lives of girls.
