This year heralds a new urgency and new inspiration for all committed to working for justice for people seeking asylum and a safe home in which to live and raise their families. While politicians of various colours continue to tell us that our resources are limited or that “they” are asking for something “they” haven’t worked for or deserve, Pope Francis calls us “to welcome, to protect, to promote and to integrate” migrants and refugees.
For a number of years, Brigidine Sisters have advocated and taken action on behalf of migrant families and people seeking refugee. We draw our inspiration from the words of Jesus: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave re drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you cared for me, I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matt 25)
We also draw inspiration from the example of countless others, particularly other women religious whose ministries are lighting a way of hope and solidarity in situations that often appear hopeless.
