Women Disciples – Then and Now

The story of Martha and Mary which we read again on the weekend (Luke 10:38 – 42) is one of the stories that forms a broader Lukan canvas where he provides women with a model of leadership but also presents them more frequently than not as being excluded from its exercise.

How might we read and pray about this story in our own time, when so many women are still excluded from leadership roles in society and Church and millions of women continue to suffer other forms of injustice in our world?

What action might the memory of Jesus and these two women call us to as we “extend and deepen our partnerships in a spirit of mutual respect and service fostering a sense of dignity and opportunity for all”. (2016 Brigidine  Congregational Forum)
