The parable in Luke 18:9-14 which is read on the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time in Year C, presents listeners with another two contrasting characters – this time a Pharisee and a tax collector who both go to the Temple to pray.
– Do you see anything of yourself and your prayer in either of the approaches or language of these men?
– What might Jesus have been responding to when he chose to tell this parable to some who considered themselves righteous and despised others?
– What attitude or behaviour might Luke been wanting to address in his community when he kept this story out of all the stories and parables he’d heard Jesus share?
– What invitation to Gospel living are you being offered this week?
The following reflection by Veronica Lawson RSM is offered to enrich prayer and reflection in the coming week. https://www.mercyworld.org/reflection-on-the-gospel-vl-ot-30c-271019-with-text.pdf.
