Brigidines acknowledge the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March.
From Peace Rally to massacre:
On 21st March 1960, during a peaceful anti-apartheid protest rally in the South African township of Sharpeville, police opened fire on protesters, killing 69 people.
Since 1966 then, the United Nations has claimed 21st March as International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It aims to raise awareness, promote educative practice, and campaign to dismantle racism in social hierarchies.
The international community is called to increase efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
“The poison of racism continues to infect our world – a toxic legacy of historic enslavement, colonialism and discrimination.
It corrupts communities, blocks opportunities, and ruins lives, eroding the very foundations of dignity, equality and justice.”
António Guterres
