On this day, we stop and remember all the different disabilities with which people live and the many ways they find support and creativity. We think especially of the Australian Leukodystrophy Support Group, founded in August 1992 by Brigidine Sister, Julie Thomas CSB, OAM who is herself a Leukodystrophy sufferer.
The aim of the support group is to provide information and support to patients and families across Australia, affected by this debilitating group of genetic diseases. Julie’s vision and tireless efforts in shaping the organisation and supporting so many individuals and families impacted by leukodystrophies are the reason the organisation exists today as a national body.
Very fittingly, Julie was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in January 2001 for her exceptional services to Australians affected by a rare and usually fatal neurological disorder, Leukodystrophy.
