On October 11 each year, Brigidine Sisters join with the United Nations and all in observing International Day of the Girl.
As women ourselves, and as many who’ve been involved in education and the pastoral ministry of girls and women over numerous years, this is a day on which we call for more opportunities for girls and increased awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender. This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence and forced marriage.
The marking of this day also reflects the successful emergence of girls and young women as a distinct cohort in society and within our churches.
There is much work to be done – let’s join with others to strengthen the resolve for greater opportunities for all girls.
We give thanks for the gift of girls and young women in our families, our communities and everywhere and pray that their dignity and contributions will be honored.
