International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually around the world on 8 March.

The origins of this international day can be traced back to the labour movements that emerged at the turn of the twentieth century in Europe and North America. It is a day to review and reflect on how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also a time to unite and network to bring about further meaningful change and greater justice for women.

UN Women’s global theme for IWD 2019 is ‘Think equal, build smart, innovate for change’, linking with the UN Commission on the Status of Women’s focus on social protection, public services and sustainable infrastructure.

On 8 March, International Women’s Day 2019 gather with some other women – women of all ages – to celebrate the gift of women in our communities, our Church and our world and share your hopes, dreams and plans of how you will pray and work to bring about change ensuring a brighter future for all girls and women.

On International Women’s Day we join with people around the world and pray:

God of all people and of hope,
We pray today for girls and women everywhere.
May they be treasured and given opportunities to be all that they can..

Give us courage to continue to speak and work for equality and justice for all
so that Your dream of life in all its fullness
may truly be experienced by all.  Amen.
