Ireland made history this month by becoming the first country in the world to pass a bill committing the nation to the divestment of all of its holdings in fossil fuel companies.
This action comes after considerable lobbying by both individuals and groups of climate change campaigners.
It is hoped that this stance by the Irish Government will bring pressure on other countries and groups to sell off their fossil fuel investments — industries which have been a major contributor to climate change.
At the 2016 Brigidine Congregational Forum held in Ireland, Brigidine Sisters recognized a call to invest “our finances ethically and in accordance with principles of social responsibility and accountability.”
We give thanks for the stance of all those who take a position of leadership on key aspects of climate policy and know we all have much work still to be done in this field.
