The Gospel reading for the 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A (Matthew 5:17 – 37) is taken from Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount. In it we listen to Jesus, the Jewish teacher addressing his disciples and those gathered to hear him.
He is heard here presenting examples of the challenges the Law present and what true fulfilment of the Law requires. Even for disciples today, God’s call in our lives demands more than any narrow understanding or ‘keeping’ of laws. Rather it calls us to ‘right relationships’ with ourselves, others and creation, honesty, transparency and justice.
