On August 8 each year the feast day of St Mary MacKillop (1842 – 1909) is celebrated. On this day we celebrate the vision of Australia’s first saint and the lives and ministries of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Mary MacKillop’s influence in Australia, and beyond, continues to have a significant impact on the lives of countless people and the Church.
Mary and the Sisters were committed to serving the poor – to going to where the need was and being a presence amongst those in need.
Mary faced fierce opposition throughout her life. In the face of trial, she was a model of forgiveness, insisting that no ill be spoken of those who wronged her, while also remaining resolute in her convictions.
Mary was remarkable as a strong female leader in 19th century Australia. In particular, education in Australia has been powerfully shaped by her dedication and determination.
In the spirit of inspiring women like Mary MacKillop, we continue to work in partnerships to help create change by our strong and gentle presence and our various ministries in local communities in Australia and beyond.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us!
