This month the University of Notre Dame Australia will host its first Theology on Tap Facebook event featuring international guest speaker Fr Conn O Maoldomhnaigh, together with Auxiliary Bishop Richard Umbers. This event will be live streamed on Monday 11 May at 6.30pm (AEST) to mark the 200th anniversary of Fr John Joseph Therry’s arrival in Sydney.
Fr Therry, one of the founding priests of the Catholic Church in Australia, was educated at Carlow College, St Patricks, in Ireland. History reminds us that Carlow College was established by Bishop Daniel Delany, Founder of the Brigidine Sisters and Patrician Brothers soon after the Penal Laws were being relaxed in Ireland. Perhaps Daniel Delany met Fr Therry prior to his death in 2014.
This raises an interesting question – in what ways was Daniel Delany’s influence felt very early in the colony of New South Wales?
