Brigidine Sisters across the Congregation recognise the United Nations’ International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9th. On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to spread the UN’s message on the protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples.
The Day aims to raise awareness that the world needs the wisdom of Indigenous Peoples and that throughout history the rights of Indigenous Peoples have been violated. The Day serves as a reminder:
In each corner of the world, the voices and wisdom of Indigenous Peoples must be listened to, their rights must be recognised and there must be just responses for their protection.
“Ignoring Indigenous communities is a grave error,
not to say a great injustice.”
